GFA says it cannot eradicate match-fixing on its own

In Ghana, no football association can fully overcome the problem of match-fixing on its own, said Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum. He was responding to President John Mahama's remarks about problems with refereeing and alleged manipulation of match results, MyJoyOnline reports.

President's statement

Mahama expressed concern about the quality of refereeing and the perception of possible match-fixing in Ghanaian football. According to him, such practices are destroying football in the country. The president also stated that matches are allegedly decided before they are played.

GFA position

In a comment to Luv FM radio station, Asante Twum spoke positively about the president's interest in football development. He agreed that the head of state had drawn attention to existing problems.

The GFA representative noted that the association had worked extensively over the past five to six years to find solutions. At the same time, he stressed that difficulties arise in any human institutions, and that it is impossible for one football association to completely overcome the problem of match-fixing.
