'I'm so sad about what I did to Liverpool fans – I understand why they're angry with me'

Luis Suarez felt “so sad” after leaving Liverpool fans angry for celebrating a goal against them.

The Uruguayan is regarded as one of the Reds’ finest-ever forwards, even if his moments of brilliance were sometimes tarnished by controversy. After three years in the Premier League, a spell which almost ended with title glory under Brendan Rodgers, he disappointed Liverpool fans by leaving for Barcelona in the summer of 2014.

He was made to wait for his debut for the Catalan giants as he served a four-month ban for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini at that summer’s World Cup in Brazil. Suarez went up against his former club five years later when Barcelona and Liverpool met in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

In the first leg at the Nou Camp, Suarez left the supporters who once idolised him raging when he wildly celebrated giving Barca the lead, with Lionel Messi scoring twice in a 3-0 win, which the Reds sensationally overturned in the second leg.

Reflecting on his first-leg celebrations, Suarez understood why they didn’t go down well with fans. He told Liverpool’s official website in 2020: "I know some Liverpool supporters were angry with me because I celebrated a goal against Liverpool here in Camp Nou and for that I am so sad.

"I accept that and I say that hopefully they understand my situation: we were playing at home and in the Champions League semi-final. I lived one of the best moments of my life there [at Liverpool] and I think the supporters didn't forget how my attitude was in the Liverpool shirt. Now hopefully they are so happy with the Premier League trophy this year."

Speaking in 2019 about his lingering connection with Liverpool, Suarez told 11Freunde: “Anyone who has ever played at Liverpool remains connected to the club for a lifetime. The team plays terrific football [under Jurgen Klopp ] and I am very interested to see how they do this year. I think we can still expect a lot."

Following those comments, Liverpool, of course, secured Champions League and Premier League glory under Klopp. Failure to win the title in 2014, despite being in pole position with a few games to go, still hurts Suarez, who said: "In the last year when I played there at Anfield I was so sad for the supporters [that we missed out on the title].”
