Edwin van der Sar has revealed his true feelings about Senne Lammens after the Manchester United No 1’s impactful debut campaign at Old Trafford.

Senne Lammens was a key late signing for the Red Devils last summer after Manchester United brought the 23-year-old Belgian shot-stopper to England.

The Man Utd No 1 had been an unknown quantity after spending his time in the Belgian Pro League before his exit from Royal Antwerp last September.

United paid an initial fee of £18.1m to Royal Antwerp for Lammens and the Belgium international has stepped up in a major way in his first season at Old Trafford.

Edwin van der Sar on what he saw of Senne Lammens in Belgium vs the Man Utd No 1 in England

Senne Lammens has made 30 appearances across all competitions for Manchester United in the 2025-26 campaign and has kept six clean sheets so far.

The Man Utd and Belgium shot-stopper established himself as the Red Devils’ new No 1 under Ruben Amorim after Andre Onana was offloaded on loan in 2025.

Speaking to Ben Foster, Edwin van der Sar has been deeply impressed with how Lammens has adapted to English football after spending his early career in Belgium.

“I think I saw a few games when he played in Belgium, at Antwerp, but to come to one of the best, the best league in the world, to a club that is in difficulty, United the last couple of years, it’s chop and change, managers, players, all kinds of things,” he said on the Fozcast podcast.

“And I think he steadied the ship when he came in, made the saves that he needed to make, was brave coming out, played with his feet also, a calm, composed figure.”

Edwin van der Sar compares Senne Lammens’ time at Man Utd with his own experience at Old Trafford

Van der Sar arrived at Old Trafford late in his prolific career after former manager Sir Alex Ferguson signed the former Juventus and Ajax star from Fulham in 2005.

The 55-year-old United legend believes that Lammens’ first season at Old Trafford looks even better when he compares it with his own time at the Red Devils.

“I think comparable, let’s say, to how I played, but I came there at 34,” Van der Sar said.

“So, in that way, he’s doing tremendously well.”

Van der Sar, who retired from professional football in 2011, lifted four Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy and two League Cups with United.
