Italian press claim 'enormous psychological and physical stress' behind Rasmus Hojlund's latest goalless streak

Manchester United loanee Rasmus Hojlund is struggling for goals ahead of his permanent Napoli move.

Napoli require one more win to clinch Champions League qualification, next playing on Monday May 11 vs Bologna.

When Napoli do secure Champions League football (they have three games left), they will have to buy Rasmus Hojlund permanently.

The clause written into the loan deal was that Napoli must buy Hojlund for £38 million if they qualify for the Champions League.

It has been claimed Napoli will formally buy Hojlund by the end of June, per the agreement.

With his move set to become permanent, Hojlund could do with a goal right now.

Did Manchester United make a mistake sending Rasmus Hojlund on loan?

Hojlund on another barren streak

It’s now May, and Rasmus Hojlund has not scored a goal since the start of March.

His lack of goals is becoming a topic of discussion in Italy, and Corriere dello Sport claim that the pressure is taking its toll.

The Italian newspaper reports: “His goalless spell has reached 49 days and six games, including the one he missed against Milan due to the flu.

“It’s not yet his lowest league record, seven games without a goal during the entire month of January, but it’s certainly not an easy time.

“He’s probably, or certainly, paying the price for the enormous psychological and physical stress accumulated as the sole centre-forward on all four fronts.”

Hojlund has scored 14 goals in 41 matches for Napoli this season, 10 in 30 Serie A games.

While he does not have any goals lately, Hojlund has contributed two assists in his last four matches.

Napoli have been struggling to score regularly too. While they recently beat Cremonese 4-0, the rest of their results in the last six weeks have seen them fail to score twice, and net just once in three matches.

Even taking this into account, Hojlund’s lack of goals just show that Manchester United should not be regretting sending him out on loan, despite some of the over the top praise he has received in Italy at times.

He is Napoli’s conundrum to solve.
