India took on Bangladesh in an AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifier at the Jawaharal Nehru stadium in Shillong on Tuesday to kick off its campaign to make the continental tournament.

The Blue Tigers are placed in Group C in the third round of qualifiers alongside Bangladesh, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

Hamza Choudhary makes international debut

In the lead-up to this match, former English Premier League player Hamza Choudhary was the cynosure of all attention.

On the field, he was naturally the go-to man for all the set-piece opportunities for the Bengal Tigers. He was also effective in defence, even blocking efforts from Sunil Chhetri during corner kicks.

Vishal Kaith nervy between the sticks

The Mohun Bagan Super Giant goalkeeper had a forgettable night under the crossbar. Right from the off, he was off guard. In three separate instances, the goalkeeper also gave away the ball and allowed the Bangladesh players to pounce on these giveaways. A stroke of luck and important interceptions from Subhasish Bose saved the goalkeeper’s face in the end.

Forgettable competitive debut for Manolo Marquez

Manolo Marquez had a forgettable competitive debut as the head coach of the Indian football team, as his team failed to show any real threat to Bangladesh, a side ranked 59 spots below in the FIFA rankings. Despite an improved performance in the second half, India never looked like it was going to score, while also being constantly caught out in defense.

“I don’t want to speak much as I am very angry and disappointed with the performance of everyone. I do not have words for this poor performance. This is not enough. Maybe this is the reality of Indian football,” Marquez said after the match.
