Jamie Carragher has taken a swipe at Liverpool supporters who booed Trent Alexander-Arnold on Sunday. The Reds right-back received a mixed reception when he was brought on against Leicester City in the Premier league.

Alexander-Arnold made his return from injury in spectacular fashion and netted the winning goal to put Liverpool on the brink of title glory. After Arsenal's draw with Crystal Palace on Wednesday night, the Reds need just a point against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday to clinch the prize.

The defender has played his part in what has been a memorable season for the club, although it could be his last at Anfield. Alexander-Arnold's contract is up at the end of the campaign and he has been subject to interest from Real Madrid.

The player's potential exit from his boyhood club has sparked plenty of strong debate.

But speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet, Reds legend Carragher was adamant the 26-year-old should not be getting stick during a game.

"I had a few mates who were at the game [Leicester vs Liverpool] and they said that he [Trent] got booed when he came onto the pitch [by Liverpool fans]," he said.

"I can understand that Liverpool supporters have all got different thoughts on him – some people are saying good luck to him, some people are really angry, and some people just think it is what it is – but you should never boo a player in your kit.

"He's playing for Liverpool; he's put the kit on and has played his part this season to win the Premier League – you don't boo your own players."

After his match-winning moment, the Liverpool star was asked about his future by Sky Sports, but remained non-committal either way.

"Look, I've said all season that I'm not going to speak on my situation," he said. "I'm not going to go into any details but days like today are very special."

Alexander-Arnold has enjoyed great success during his years at Anfield. This will be his second Premier League title, while he has already won the Champions League, FA Cup and the Carabao Cup.

Real Madrid look set for a transitional summer. Manager Carlo Ancelotti has been tipped to leave the club, with former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso the front-runner to take over.
