Jesse Hogan says make me a Magpie in first big trade bombshell

Jesse Hogan will play for Collingwood in 2027.

The 2024 Coleman medallist will be traded from the Giants this off-season having already been told he wouldn’t be offered a contract in western Sydney.

He is not a free agent but will be traded, likely for very little, and sign a two-year deal at the Magpies.

Hogan has played 190 games across three clubs (100 at GWS, 71 at Melbourne, 19 at Fremantle) and kicked 409 goals.

“Jesse Hogan has decided to continue his career at Collingwood,” the Magpies confirmed in a statement.

“The Club look forward to welcoming him to the football club.”

It was just last month that Hogan was let go by the Giants – the club where he earnt his maiden All Australian jacket and Coleman Medal in 2024.

In that same year he claimed the club’s best and fairest Kevin Sheedy Medal.

But injury has derailed his past two seasons, including a shock middle finger fracture that required surgery earlier this year.

His 2025 campaign was hindered by that a persistent foot problem that required off-season surgery to remove bone spurs.

“We’ve seen Jesse at his best in the orange and charcoal and know what he’s capable of when he’s able to play with consistency,” Giants footy boss Jason McCartney said last month.

“However, as we look ahead, we believe this is the right time for Jesse to pursue a new opportunity while we continue to shape our forward line for the years ahead.

“Again, we’re thankful for everything he gave our club and we wish all the best with what comes next.”

AFL 360 hosts Gerard Whateley and Garry Lyon agreed it was a “risk” by the Magpies to put a deal in front of Hogan.

“The last full season he played, he kicked 77 goals – and that was in 2024,” Whateley said.

“This is risk-reward.”

“I don’t know what they are paying for him, but good Jesse Hogan would be their best key forward – and that’s Dan McStay who had a great finish to the year, I include that in there,” Lyon added.

“But it’s a risk.

“I know he only played nine games and when he did play, he didn’t look anything like the Jesse Hogan of the Coleman Medal year.

“They’re going to roll the dice.

“They make no apologies Collingwood.

“They’ll carry (Tim) Membrey, McStay, they’ll carry (Charlie) West and Jesse Hogan onto a list.

“They’re not all going to play. There will be some players running around in the VFL.”
