A young Indian contingent, including 16-year-old Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi, will be in focus when the Chennai Open 2025 WTA 250 tennis tournament’s main draw gets underway at the SDAT Stadium on Monday.This will be just the second WTA 250 event hosted in India and the first since the inaugural Chennai Open held at the same venue three years ago.The Chennai Open 2025 WTA 250 tennis matches will be available to watch on live streaming and live telecast in India.Czechia’s Linda Fruhvirtova, who won the inaugural Chennai Open WTA title as a teenager last time around, will be returning to defend her title.Turkiye’s Zeynep Sonmez, the current world No. 69, is the top seed in this year’s singles main draw, which also includes Croatia’s 79th-ranked Donna Vekic, the Paris 2024 Olympics silver medallist, as the third seed.Francesca Jones of Great Britain (74), Indonesia’s Janice Tjen (80), Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti (91) and Leolia Jeanjean of France (94) are the other top 100 singles players in this year’s entry lists.Several Indian tennis players have also been handed wild cards for the WTA250 tournament at home.Sahaja Yamalapalli, 24, is the second best-ranked Indian singles tennis player currently at world No. 337 and is in the main draw for the WTA 250 event.The 23-year-old Shrivalli Bhamidipaty (328) and 16-year-old Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi (652) are also in the main draw and will face each other in the opening round.Despite being the youngest entry in the competition, Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi will be in focus in what is essentially her home turf in Tamil Nadu.The youngster shot to fame earlier this year after upsetting several higher-ranked opponents to reach the semi-finals at the WTA 125 Mumbai Open. She currently trains at the esteemed Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain and is considered the brightest prospect of Indian tennis.Veteran Ankita Raina started from the qualifying rounds but lost to Japan’s Mei Yamaguchi 6-1, 6-3 in the first round, failing to qualify for the main draw. Riya Bhatia and Diya Ramesh also bowed out after straight-set losses in their respective first-round qualifying matches.The 20-year-old Vaishnavi Adkar beat Amina Anshba 7-5, 6-2 to move into the final round of qualifying but will still need to overcome France’s Lew Yan Foon to enter the main draw.As many as 10 Indian players - including four all-Indian pairings - feature in the doubles draw. The Indian doubles contingent is led by Prarthana Thombare, who is seeded fourth alongside her Dutch partner Ariane Hartono.Barring Thombare, Sahaja Yamalapalli is the only other Indian partnering a foreign player in Caroline Werner of Germany.Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi will team up with Vaishnavi Adkar in the doubles draw.
