Andrew Flintoff

The romantic and most logical internal option available to the ECB. Flintoff already coaches the England Lions, which gives him intimate knowledge of the emerging talent pool and would require almost no handover period. He is also close friends with Key, a relationship dating back to their playing days together.

The complication is bandwidth rather than credentials. Flintoff recently agreed to become head coach of Sydney Thunder in Australia's Big Bash League, a significant commitment that he would presumably need to reconsider or abandon entirely should the England job actually materialise this summer.

Jonathan Trott
