On Day 1, the pitch, which appeared to have little to no seam movement, failed to assist the Indian fast bowlers. English openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett negated a probing first hour and a tight spell by Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep early morning. Just when they looked settled, Nitish Kumar Reddy removed both of them in a span of four deliveries in his first over.

The double blow didn’t budge the home side much as Joe Root and vice-captain Ollie Pope played with caution and added 109 runs for the third wicket before Ravindra Jadeja dismissed the latter on the very first delivery after Tea. The new World No. 1 Test batter, Harry Brook, also departed soon when Bumrah cleaned him up from a delivery which moved in for the right-hander.

From there, Root and skipper Ben Stokes added 79 runs as England scored at nearly 3 runs per over. Root remained unbeaten on 99 while Stokes made 39* off 102.
