Daniil Medvedev expecting to be fined after what happened in Australian Open first round match but hopes it's not too expensive

Daniil Medvedev had to come through his first round match in five sets after coming back to his wildcard opponent Kasidit Samrej.

Medvedev trailed the world No.418 by two sets to one, before producing a fightback to keep himself alive at the Australian Open.

This was the first match that the world number five had played in 2025, with some predicting Medvedev to suffer an early Australian Open exit.

Despite progressing to the second round, Medvedev may find himself in trouble after an incident that occurred in the third set.

In the final game of the third set that Samrej won to go two sets to one up, Medvedev expressed his frustration by hitting his racket on the net.

As a result, the Go Pro camera on the net broke and Medvedev received a warning for his on-court actions.

When asked about a potential punishment in his post-match press conference, Medvedev expressed that he hopes not to receive too heavy of a fine.

“Honestly, I hope not too big, because probably, like, the fine is usually for breaking the racquet, and the camera is going to cost some, but I don’t think Go Pro is that expensive,” said Medvedev

“What I have to say is the cameras was very, very strong, because my racquet didn’t handle the damage, but the camera did. It broke down, but there was not one piece going out from the camera. Very strong. I was very surprised.”

Can Daniil Medvedev repeat 2024 Australian Open run?

It is not the first time that Medvedev has faced an early five set match at the Australian Open, having fended off Emil Ruusuvuori from two sets to love down last year in the second round.

Medvedev played four five set matches at the 2024 Australian Open, having also beaten both Hubert Hurkacz and Alexander Zverev by going the distance.

The Russian was eventually the victim of a comeback in the final when Jannik Sinner came from two sets to love down to snatch the Australian Open title from Medvedev.

This is one of two times that this has happened to Medvedev, with Rafael Nadal also coming from two sets to love down in the 2022 final.
