In his closing comments following the defeat to SRH a couple of nights ago at the Chepauk, Ruturaj Gaikwad was asked about the home support. The CSK captain offered some expected praise and wrapped up by saying CSK will come back much stronger next year. CSK are sixth on the table and don't have an (E) to their name yet but a sombre mood in their camp is understandable. Another bad result and it will be the third season in a row where one of the two most successful teams in IPL history will not make a playoffs appearance.CSK are still not out though. They need a win and a few other results to go their way if they were to somehow sneak in at fourth spot. It's not a position they've often found themselves in during until their fifth title won in 2023. Till that point, they'd only failed to reach the last-four twice in 14 seasons of participation. But an admittedly underwhelming mega auction and a spate of injuries has pushed them to a position of weakness where the scope for recovery, at least for this season, is infinitesimal. The ground below GT's feet feels a lot firmer. Their run over the last five IPL seasons, where they've qualified four times, is perhaps a throwback to CSK's happier times where they were the gold standard for consistency.Shubman Gill's team has also been deceptively good this season. They might not have the pomp and pizzazz at the top like RR, SRH or even PBKS, but they know exactly how to be effective - Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan have 500-plus runs each. This is also the one side that has been able to combine runs at the top with a solid, all-round bowling returns. They have three bowlers in the top-10 wicket takers for the season - five if you broaden your scope to top-15.There's almost an absence of chaos to their season's arc, as they find themselves comfortably among the playoffs contestants. A spot in top-two isn't confirmed, and will need a few twists and turns to happen. Yet GT seem to carry an air of inevitability, at the very least about their game on Thursday. What to expect:A sub-200 game? GT have won four out of their six matches at the venue - two while chasing scores below 200 and twice while defending them. It's a venue where pacers have enjoyed life and change of pace has troubled batter. More of the same could be expected.Tactics & Match-ups:Ruturaj Gaikwad has endured slow starts this year and has another tough outing ahead of him. He has 99 (72) and two dismissals against Mohammed Siraj and a run-a-ball 71 with three dismissals against Kagiso Rabada. In the reverse fixture, he scored 74 off 60, but was on 20 off 37 at one point. He went 35 balls without a boundary in that innings - the longest such sequence in IPL 2026.Tactics & Match-ups: Akeal Hosein vs Jos Buttler has the makings of an intriguing tussle. Buttler has scored 145 runs in 105 deliveries from the spinner in this format, at a strike rate of 138.09 while being dismissed four times. Sai Sudharsan meanwhile, has faced just nine balls from Hosein and taken 24 runs off it and has been dismissed once."I think the first important thing is to play good cricket and win tomorrow. We are not in a position to think about winning at a very big margin or making a very big win. It's about again doing the right things which we have been doing and first get a victory. If we are in that position, yes, as every team we would love to close it as smooth as possible or give us the best opportunity to be in (the) top two." - Sai Sudharsan
