Leylah Fernandez makes speech after winning the Japan Open and has prediction to share about her opponent

Leylah Fernandez has come through to win the Japan Women’s Open in Osaka, beating Tereza Valentova.

Fernandez, the player beaten by Emma Raducanu in the 2021 US Open, raced through the first set 6-0 before losing the second 7-5.

The third set saw the Canadian player regain her composure, and she managed to claim it 6-3 to lift the title.

Fernandez was the number four seed at this event and looks on course for victory all week, playing some brilliant tennis.

After the win, she took some time out to praise her opponent and made a prediction about Valentova.

Shortly after her win, Fernandez delivered a very classy speech on the court and had plenty to say about her opponent on the day.

Fernandez has now won five career titles and the challenge for the Canadian as her career progresses will be to win some of the bigger titles on offer.

After her victory, she said in her interview: “Congratulations, Tereza. You played amazing. Wonderful week to you, your coach, and your family. I’m sure I’m gonna see you in many more finals like this one.

“I wanna thank the fans for coming and supporting us this week. Not only myself, but every player who played this tournament.

Fernandez can enjoy Grand Slam success in the future

At 23-years-old the future does feel like it could be very bright indeed for Fernandez.

Having made a Grand Slam final previously, there will be optimism that the same can be accomplished in the future and that she can finally get over the line and win one of the game’s big ones.

Canadian tennis does feel like it’s in a good place at the moment and Fernandez is the poster girl for the sport, with the left-hander having a very high ceiling.

The WTA is in a very healthy state at the moment when it comes to the competitive nature of the sport and Fernandez being the world number 27 epitomises that.
