Marseille are still open to bringing Paul Pogba to the club after a January transfer did not surface. The two-time Manchester United midfielder is currently a free agent and is unable to play until March.

Pogba's ban from football will end with only two months of the season left after he was suspended due to testing positive for having a banned substance in his body. The initial four-year ban was brought down and has now offered Pogba a way back into the top-flight professional game.

Despite suggestions that he could be set for another return to Old Trafford - something pushed more by ex-players than those in the know - United are not thought to have seriously discussed a deal. Pogba left the club for free for the second time in 2022 at the end of his contract.

Rio Ferdinand, speaking on his YouTube channel, has been keen to see him return to Carrington in some form. "You'd like to think he would [be going somewhere]," the former defender said. "Surely, he's got to go somewhere.

"Pogba at United? I'd go, 'Come in and train with us and let's see what you've got.' I'd do that. I would've done that already. I'd say, 'Come in and get fit, and let's have a little look.' "

Pogba, who turns 32 two weeks after his ban is lifted, has only made 12 appearances in the last two-and-a-half years. Initially out due to injury - which sidelined him for the Qatar World Cup - Pogba then saw a nightmare spell back in Turin come to an anti-climatic end in November when it was confirmed that his contract had been terminated.

Under new manager Thiago Motta, Pogba had no way back in Italy and has been trying to get himself into the best shape possible ahead of a much-anticipated return. No mid-season move was found and he will now have to keep on waiting.

As one of the many sides to have been linked with Pogba, Marseille remain interested. “We thought about it," admitted sporting director Medhi Benatia.

“We wanted to do it. The problem is, if we brought in Paul Pogba, who isn’t yet fit, does it make sense to shake up our squad for a player who won’t be able to participate in the end of the season?

“If something can be done, we will be delighted to welcome a player like Paul Pogba to give us a helping hand next year, if the opportunity presents itself.” Roberto De Zerbi's side certainly haven't been shy of making big-name transfers.

Not only did they buy Mason Greenwood from United - the attacker played 71 times with Pogba during their overlapping time at the club - but Adrien Rabiot, Elye Wahi, Neal Maupay, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Ismeal Bennacer have all been added. The prospect of now seeing Greenwood and Pogba together is still alive.
