Australian Open tennis news 2025, Jannik Sinner responds to pneumonia rumours after Alex de Minaur match

Pneumonia? Never heard of it, mate.

Men's world No.1 Jannik Sinner was coy on his health issues after dismantling top Aussie player Alex de Minaur in the Australian Open quarter finals on Wednesday night.

The Italian superstar needed less than two hours to end Australia's dream of having a semi finalist at their home grand slam for the first time since Ash Barty.

Sinner was close to faultless throughout the match despite reports earlier in the day that he was battling pneumonia.

Pneumonia is a serious infection that impacts the lungs, and it was thought Sinner may struggle to go toe to toe with de Minaur if the Aussie could keep his opponent out on the court long enough.

Instead the home favourite found it impossible to get a ball past Sinner and looked dismayed when the lanky reigning champion easily won their baseline hitting duels.

There were mixed reports among the Nine panel on Wednesday morning about Sinner's fitness, with former Aussie player John Millman revealing he hadn't seen the Italian training at all on Tuesday.

Lleyton Hewitt suggested Sinner did some hitting on an indoor court, which the player confirmed when speaking to Jim Courier after his win.

"Yesterday was a very easy day. I played just half an hour, 40 minutes with my coaches," Sinner said.

"They gave me a good rhythm. But talking about general physical, I feel like, especially when you are young, you recover very fast, it's a bit different."

Sinner had put a scare through Melbourne Park on Monday when he fell ill during his match against Holger Rune, and took a lengthy timeout.

He rallied to win that match, and then easily beat de Minaur, but his fitness will continue to be a talking point ahead of his semi against Ben Shelton - and potentially another trophy decider.

When asked post-match if the pneumonia rumours were true, Sinner suggested they weren't but didn't directly deny them.

"After the match against Holger we made some blood test, you know, some tests. They were all solid, all good," Sinner told media.

"So, you know, sometimes it can happen that you just feel not that well in that day. Today I woke up feeling much, much better.

"I told my team straight away that, you know, I'm feeling good tonight. Obviously playing not with the heat helps you, especially when you are not feeling that well.

"But today I felt well already in the morning. I'm still not perfect, but I'm not concerned in couple of days that I should be fine.

"When I went on court, I felt great. With the adrenaline, it helps a lot."

Sinner is not the only health concern heading into Friday's men's semi finals.

Ten-time champion Novak Djokovic is yet again battling a mystery leg injury after pulling up lame during his win against Carlos Alcaraz.
