‘Fans are angry, so are we’: Ange makes bold claim as Spurs booed again, unwanted record looms

Ange Postecoglou lamented another loss and game “we should have won” as the Australian again defended Tottenham’s “outstanding” football and insisted his players had not given up in the Premier League.

A 2-1 loss at home to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday morning (AEST) was Spurs’ 18th defeat of a miserable Premier League season and leaves them just two places above the relegation zone.

It also put Postecoglou just one loss away from equalling the club’s record for most defeats in a Premier League season.

The latest performance was met with boos from fans at half-time and Postecoglou insisted he shared fans’ frustrations as a dismal campaign continued.

“I don’t need to say anything to the fans. The fans are disappointed. They’re probably angry, as we are as well,” Postecoglou said.

“It’s too many losses. I know that. I don’t need to tell the fans anything. The fans clearly wouldn’t be happy with our results but neither am I and neither are the players, and from our perspective it’s something we need to accept responsibility for. We’ve fallen short of the standards we need to have.

“The flip side of that is it’s not because of the way we’re playing ... it’s another game we should have won.”

Postecoglou still has a chance to win silverware in his second season at the club.

Spurs face Norway’s Bodo/Glimt in the semi-finals of the Europa League next month, with the winner of the competition guaranteed a place in next season’s Champions League.

The Australian, whose team travels to face Liverpool on Sunday, acknowledged the Europa League was now his priority but he denied his players’ minds were elsewhere.

“It’s not like we lost because the players chucked it in,” Postecoglou said.

“If that’s what (people) saw they’re watching something different to me.

“I dont think they lacked motivation today because I thought our football was outstanding but again I thought we paid the price for lacking focus and concentration in key moments and it’s another game we let slip.

“... It’s another game we’ve lost where we shouldn’t lose and it’s been a big part of our season in that we just make things really difficult for ourselves in key moments.

“... It’s a shame because our football was outstanding. We totally dominated the game and even with two goals conceded I still feel like we deserved to win the game but at the same time it’s another loss, it’s another unacceptable loss for us.”
