Bianca Andreescu’s bid to return to the US Open main draw came up just short.The Mississauga, Ont., native fell 6-2, 3-6, 4-6 to Tamara Zidansek in the final round of qualifying Friday in New York City.The 2019 champion had straight-sets wins in each of her first two qualifying rounds and was up 2-0 in the opening set Thursday against Zidansek when rain pushed the rest of their match to Friday.Andreescu dealt with an apparent injury throughout the match and took a medical timeout in the third set.Andreescu will finish the year appearing in only one singles Grand Slam main draw, coming earlier this summer at Wimbledon where she won three qualifying matches but fell in the opening round to China’s Shuai Zhang.Andreescu is the No. 183-ranked WTA singles player in the world. She previous won World Tennis events in Vero Beach and Bradenton, Fla., earlier this year.Meanwhile, fellow Canadian Liam Draxl of Newmarket, Ont., also lost in the final round of qualifying Friday, falling to Australia’s Tristan Schoolkate 6-4, 5-7, 6-6 (10-7).Draxl, 24, is ranked No. 217 in the world according to ATP.
