Manchester United to make Bruno Fernandes best-paid player with new contract

MANCHESTER UNITED are prepared to make Bruno Fernandes their best-paid player.

Fernandes scored a hat-trick in United’s 5-2 humbling of Ipswich Town four days after he received the PFA Player of the Year award.

The 31-year-old’s existing contract expires next year but the club have the option of an additional year.

United are expected to offer Fernandes fresh terms that would put him on a salary of around £350,000 a week, with his contract extended by a year.

When Fernandes inked new terms with United in 2022 and 2024, the expiry date of his contract was only extended by a year on each occasion but he received a significant pay increase.

Fernandes currently earns around £300,000 a week but has a compelling case to be made United’s highest earner.

The Portugal international claimed the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year accolade and won an unprecedented fifth Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award in May.

Fernandes also set a new record for assists in a Premier League campaign in 2025-26 as United rose to third and qualified for the Champions League.

The club were prepared to sell Fernandes to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr for £80million last year but Ruben Amorim blocked a possible departure.

United took measures earlier this year to prevent any attempts to prise Fernandes from the club and his future has been moot for the best part of a year.

Fernandes indicated that he was open to a return to Portugal or Italy in the latter years of his career in an interview last November, which was considered to be an opening salvo ahead of contract talks.

Although the United have introduced a more disciplined salary structure, there is an acknowledgement that Fernandes should be fairly remunerated.

Marcus Rashford is United’s highest earner on a weekly wage of £325,000 but spent 18 months out on loan at Aston Villa and Barcelona.
