The grandstands of Washington D.C. were filled to the brim to catch a glimpse of tennis great Venus Williams.

At 45-years-old, the four-time Olympic champion returned to the courts after 16 months with two opening round victories at the Mubadala Citi DC Open 2025.

Back on her cherished hard courts on home soil, Williams has notched up the same number of WTA tour triumphs this week than she has in the past two-and-a-half years.

With the former world no. 1 on the preliminary entry list to the U.S. Open in the mixed doubles competition alongside Reilly Opelka, fans are dreaming of an almighty return to Flushing Meadows for the competition’s four-time champion in singles and doubles.

“I’m just here for now, and who knows?” Williams said after her two latest tour wins via the Associated Press. “Maybe there’s more…but at the moment, I’m focused just on this. I haven’t played in a year.

“There is no doubt I can play tennis, but obviously coming back to play matches, it takes time to get in the swing of things. I definitely feel I’ll play well. I’m still the same player - I’m a big hitter, I hit big. This is my brand.”

Williams is clear that the grand return is only for her own benefit and joy, having this month opened up on her career-long battle with fibroids. Could a comeback in Washington D.C., a city so dear to Venus, be the start of a special return to the courts?
