Liverpool Want to Sign Giorgio Scalvini as Marc Guehi Alternative in £45m Deal

Liverpool's failure to bring in a centre-back during the transfer window could see them make a move for Atalanta star Giorgio Scalvini in the coming months, according to reports.

The Reds spent big in the summer transfer window, acquiring the likes of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak among others to pad out Arne Slot's squad in a bid to reclaim the Premier League title.

It's safe to say that hasn't happened. Liverpool already sat 14 points adrift of Arsenal heading into Saturday's fixtures, and their form hasn't suggested any change to reclaim that - which could lead to Slot bringing in Scalvini after his continued progress in Serie A.

Report: Liverpool 'Eyeing' Scalvini as Marc Guehi Alternative

The report by SportsBoom states that Liverpool are eyeing Scalvini as a potential £45million signing, after missing out on Marc Guehi to Manchester City.

The Italian centre-back has long been touted as one of the best young defenders in the game, with his 'world-class' talent and potential making him one of the most sought-after centre-backs in European football.

Although he's had injury setbacks, Scalvini is seen as one of the finest emerging talents in the league and is likely to command a significant transfer fee.

Scalvini is only 22 years of age, and he came through Atalanta's youth system, where he made his debut for the club aged 17.

Regular appearances through his first two seasons at the club saw him become one of the highest-rated young players in the world, though a huge injury to his knee at the start of last season hindered much of his game time.

Scalvini has since come back into the fold, and boasts two goals in Serie A already this season in just nine games. Liverpool, on the other hand, already have one young Italian centre-back in Geovanni Leoni, who they bought over the summer - but Scalvini would offer Champions League experience and they could form a strong partnership in the years to come.

Liverpool Need to Find Virgil Van Dijk's Successor Quickly

Virgil van Dijk has been a stalwart for the Reds in recent years, though he is getting older and a long-term starlet will be needed to come in and replace him eventually.

Ibrahima Konate has struggled with form and doesn't look to be the rock that the Reds once thought he was, whilst Joe Gomez has suffered with injury and Leoni hasn't featured for the club since picking up a knee injury on his debut.

Scalvini could be the man to finally end that succession line at Anfield.
