Coventry's Premier League return has not gone quite as planned as they go into their fourth match in search of a first goal and a first point.

It has been a baptism of fire for Frank Lampard's Sky Blues, with matches already ticked off against Arsenal and Manchester City, so they are unlikely to be panicking just yet as they prepare for a visit from keep-ball kings Brighton.

Coventry vs Brightonpreview

Played three, lost three and hardening in the relegation market, it would be easy to give up on Coventry.

Without a goal and bottom of the table, Frank Lampard's men came up as champions but have now displaced Hull at the head of the market to go straight back down.

And all after just three rounds of fixtures, two of which were at Arsenal and Manchester City.

But rather than join the market in raising the white flag, instead give them a chance at home to Brighton in the early Sunday shootout.

This is exactly the sort of game where they should be looking for points, although their critics will point to the fact that so was Hull at home – and they also lost that one.

But Coventry have not become a bad side in the space of three weekends. They were second best at Arsenal in a 3-0 loss but played well at home to Hull, only to suffer a late sucker-punch.

And they were arguably better still at the Etihad last weekend, going shot for shot and corner for corner with City despite having just 22 per cent of the possession.

That is significant because a similar pattern of play may unfold at the CBS Arena this weekend. Keep-ball kings Brighton will inevitably boss the possession – they have done so in every game they have played this season – while City will look to launch Ephron Mason-Clark and Taiwo Awoniyi on the counter.

Assuming they remain confident in their own ability, Coventry have little to fear from a weakened Albion side.

The visitors are missing their two star wingers, Yankuba Minteh and Kaoru Mitoma, plus the excellent Jack Hinshelwood. They are minus a goalscorer and, as in previous seasons, looking wasteful in front of goal.

Brighton have four points on the board but they were handed three of them by ten-man Aston Villa and then showed defensive frailty in a pulsating 4-3 loss at Chelsea before being held 1-1 at home by Leeds.

Coventry look like they are being written off a tad too early, especially given their performance at City. It was the Hull defeat that will sting because those opportunities against genuine peers are thin on the ground.

Conference League contenders Brighton are arguably not their peers, but the Sky Blues are more than capable of matching them.

Pinnock to offer set-piece threat

Ethan Pinnock made his first start for Coventry in the 1-0 loss at the Etihad and won glowing praise from Lampard.

The Jamaica international's Premier League pedigree was critical in keeping Coventry competitive and he also managed an effort on goal, trying his luck from a set-play.

Pinnock was an occasional goalscorer for Brentford over several seasons in west London and he remains a real presence at set-pieces, something Coventry will need to be good at this season.

Coventry vs Brighton Bet Builder

Matt Grimes 2+ tackles

The Coventry midfield anchorman made five tackles against City and Brighton's incessant ball control ought to ensure he puts in at least another two.

Diego Gomez 2+ shots

Albion are likely to have most of the ball and probably more shots, with Diego Gomez set to add two more to the 12 he has totted up in three outings.

Brighton to receive most cards

The Seagulls have collected seven yellow cards to Coventry's four this season.
