Liverpool could hijack big-money Man Utd transfer as $114.5m deal suggested

Liverpool's desire to strengthen its midfield this summer could lead it to hijack a move for one of its biggest rivals' top targets, who is expected to cost around $114.5m

Liverpool could look to steal Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha from under Manchester United's noses this summer as the two Premier League giants continue to be linked with a move for the 25-year-old.

Having impressed with his performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Germany this summer, Nmecha has grabbed plenty of attention from some of the biggest clubs across Europe ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, and could soon find himself at the center of a bidding war.

While Germany only reached the Round of 32 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, falling to Paraguay in a shock defeat last week (Jun. 29), Nmecha was one of the few shining lights for Julian Nagelsmann's side, who is looking likely to be succeeded by Jurgen Klopp.

The former England and Manchester City youth player started all four of Germany's World Cup games, registering one goal and two assists, with his singular strike coming in the 7-1 mauling of Curacao in Die Mannschaft's opening fixture.

It followed a 2025-26 campaign in which he made 42 appearances for Borussia Dortmund across all competitions, scoring five goals and providing three assists, notably helping the German giant finish second in the Bundesliga.

Nmecha is now being highly touted for a return to England this summer, and reports suggest that Manchester United could be one of the frontrunners for his signature.

However, Liverpool has also been credited with an interest in the 6-foot-3 midfielder, who is valued at $114.5m by Borussia Dortmund, according to German outlet SportsBild, and the Reds are now being urged by a former Premier League title winner to make their move.

"Felix Nmecha was one of the players that kind of stood out in the Germany team. He performed well; he kept winning the ball. I think he would suit Liverpool with Iraola as manager," ex-Germany international Robert Huth told Who Scored, per Empire of the Kop.

"I know how he likes the fast-flowing football, the quick turnaround, winning the ball high. Nmecha's been doing that in the World Cup, so whether they go for it or not, who knows, but he's certainly got a good ability."

Ranking in the 71st percentile against his peers across Europe's top five leagues last season, Nmecha averaged 4.49 ball recoveries and won possession in the final third an average of 0.49 times per Bundesliga game, per FotMob.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, Nmecha's World Cup performances will have significantly increased his transfer value, which was only believed to be around $57 million ( transfermarkt ) prior to this summer's tournament.

The Reds will certainly not want to pay over the odds for the German international, though he is believed to be receptive to a return to the Premier League, which could strengthen Liverpool's standing if it decides to go all in for Nmecha.

Should Liverpool decide to wait another year, though, it would be able to get Nmecha for a lower price, as the midfielder's contract includes an $91.5 million release clause, active from the summer of 2027, which drops to $80 million the following year.
