Not to comply with the sanctions

The Senegalese Football Federation has decided not to comply with the disciplinary measures imposed by the Confederation of African Football, following the controversial African Cup of Nations final in Rabat a couple of weeks ago.

The African Football Confederation had sanctioned players from both teams for the inconveniences and incidents caused during this year’s final, imposing both financial penalties and suspensions from international matches, which could delay or prevent certain players from playing in the World Cup this summer.

This decision not to appeal the sanctions imposed by the governing body applies to both individual and collective penalties, ranging from fines and suspensions of players and the coach to a collective fine imposed on the Senegalese Football Federation. Head coach Pape Thiaw and players Illiman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr, who were individually sanctioned, would have the backing of their federation to not comply with the disciplinary measures.

During the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, there were some incidents involving pitch invasions and “inappropriate fan behavior,” but the most striking event was Senegal’s and its coach’s attempt to abandon the match after the referee awarded a penalty to Morocco in the final minutes. This latest incident sparked a reaction from the Senegalese team, who attempted to leave the field of play. The match was delayed, but in the end both teams resumed play and Senegal won. After the controversy and once the final was over, the Moroccan national team appealed to CAF over a possible penalty that would have awarded them the win; however, CAF dismissed the appeal and kept the championship crown in Dakar.
