De Zerbi warned he risks ‘negative spiral’ at Spurs after winless start

Gary Neville has warned Roberto De Zerbi that he must get things right quickly at Tottenham to avoid a 'negative spiral'.

Spurs have opened the season with successive defeats to Brentford and Newcastle United, and have failed to score in their first two league games for the first time in 51 years.

Goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa secured Newcastle three points in the capital on Saturday evening, as Spurs struggled to make an impression on the game.

The North London side's struggles come despite a record-breaking summer spend, which has included three signings made for fees in excess of £85m.

Sky Sports' pundit Gary Neville has warned Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi that he needs to improve results quickly if the club are to avoid another 'negative spiral', following two consecutive campaigns of disappointment in the Premier League.

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, he said: "It's too early to start piling into teams, but it's not too early to start asking difficult questions and say 'what's going on, why have these players not embedded better than they have', because some teams do come together without a lot of time in pre-season.

"So when you see teams that are losing matches and they don't look very good, they look disorganised, they look like they're not combining together, we shouldn't just accept it, and think 'it's going to come together in time'.

"Tottenham have got to get themselves right pretty quickly, because they're giving encouragement to other teams right now.

"They've been battered at Brentford, they've been done at home by Newcastle, and they need to get a grip of it quite quickly, because teams will fancy their chances going there, and you've got to try and make sure that you get rid of that negativity spiral quickly.
