Billy Root: Glamorgan batter to join Colin Ingram in retirement

Batter Billy Root will follow fellow long-serving Glamorgan player Colin Ingram into retirement from top-flight cricket at the end of the 2026 season.

The 34-year-old joined the Welsh county in 2019 from Nottinghamshire, making 67 appearances that included seven hundreds and a memorable double century at Northampton as he totalled almost 5,000 Glamorgan runs.

Root, brother of England captain and batting great Joe, also helped inspire their 2024 One-Day Cup final win, their second in three years.

Glamorgan director of cricket Mark Wallace said: "Billy has been a hugely important part of Glamorgan over the last seven seasons.

"His professionalism, his consistency, and his ability to perform in big moments have made him a key figure in our squad.

"He is admired by team-mates and staff alike, and his contribution to our recent white-ball success cannot be overstated."

Root has appeared in two County Championship Division One games in 2026.
