When No. 2 seed Elise Mertens last took on Taylor Townsend (2024 Miami), she was only able to claim four games. The Belgian is looking to avenge that loss in the opening round of the 2025 WTA Singapore Tennis Open. Who do you think will come out on top?WTA Singapore Day 2 PredictionsKimberly Birrell vs Polina KudermetovaHead-to-head: Birrell 1-0Polina Kudermetova has been one of the in-form players of the season so far with a 10-2 record, losing only to Aryna Sabalenka and Magdalena Frech. The Russian made her big breakthrough with the Brisbane final and then qualified for the Australian Open. Her indoor record last year was pretty poor, but she seems like she’s comfortably the better player compared to Kimberly Birrell right now. Could be a good chance to avenge that Roland Garros loss from last year.Prediction: Kudermetova in 2Moyuka Uchijima vs Olivia GadeckiHead-to-head: 3-3It’s a pretty big sample in the head-to-head with Olivia Gadecki winning their first three matches and then Moyuka Uchijima firing back (including two wins in 2024). Can the Japanese keep going and lead the count for the first time? It seems like it should be possible. Gadecki hasn’t picked up a win this season yet, while Uchijima almost took down Mirra Andreeva at the Australian Open. The best parts of that match had her really going after her forehand and she needs to find that sort of gutsy tennis again.Prediction: Uchijima in 3Embed from Getty ImagesJil Teichmann vs Harriet DartHead-to-head: 1-1Harriet Dart has a ton of indoor experience compared to most players on the tour as these conditions tend to dominate the ITF Tour in Great Britain. Her game naturally doesn’t fit courts like this that much though and while you could argue neither does Jil Teichmann’s, the Swiss certainly packs a bigger punch in her ground game. This should be pretty entertaining and it’s Teichmann who won their previous hard-court meeting. If she finds a good level on the day, she still has that edge.Prediction: Teichmann in 3Elise Mertens vs Taylor TownsendHead-to-head: Townsend 1-0Taylor Townsend is coming off another Grand Slam doubles title with Katerina Siniakova, but we know she remains a dangerous singles competitor as well. At Miami last year, she dropped just four games in her only previous meeting with Elise Mertens. It’s surprising how little she’s played indoors in her career as her serve-and-volleying skills could really shine here. The upset seems possible, but watch out for Mertens who started the season on a pretty high note.Prediction: Townsend in 3Main Photo Credit: Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports
