Olympic champion Peter Wilson appointed India's new trap shooting coach

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has appointed renowned British shooter Peter Wilson as the new foreign coach for the national trap shooting team.

Considered one of the most inspirational figures in trap shooting as a whole, Wilson is best remembered for winning the gold medal in double trap at the London 2012 Olympics.

It was notably the first Olympic medal for a British shooter since Richard Faulds won the gold in the same event at the Sydney 2000 Olympics and saw Wilson awarded the prestigious Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2013.

The British shotgun shooter has also held the world record in double trap, which was removed from the Olympic shooting programme after Rio 2016.

Wilson’s incredible journey in shooting began as a teenager after a shoulder injury sustained during a snowboarding accident left him unable to pursue cricket or squash.

After retiring from the sport, Wilson ventured into coaching and guided fellow Brit Nathan Hales to a trap gold at the Paris 2024, ending Great Britain's 12-year-long wait for a gold medal in a trap event at the Olympics.

Interestingly, Wilson had applied for the role of India’s trap shooting coach just after the conclusion of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

“I want to work with the senior team to prepare them for the LA 2028 and the juniors to prepare them for the next 8-12 years,” Wilson had said at the time.
