Ghani wins FAM presidency

Ghani secured 20 votes to Shahril’s five during FAM’s extraordinary congress and executive committee election at a hotel here, which came seven months after FAM’s entire leadership stepped down following an AFC governance review.

Ghani is the Malaysian Football League president while Shahril is deputy president of the Selangor Football Association.

Rosmadi Ismail was elected vice-president 1 after collecting 15 votes, beating Firdaus Mohamed and Syed Yazid Syed Omar, who received five votes each.

N Saaran was elected vice-president 3 after winning 18 votes to Afizal Abu Othman’s seven.

Azizudin Shariff, Azhar Jamaluddin and Alijus @ Ali Sipil were elected executive committee members, representing state football associations.

The trio emerged from a seven-candidate contest for three seats, with Azizudin and Azhar securing 19 votes each and Alijus receiving 15.

The remaining votes went to Tang Chee Hong (12), Faizul Nor (four) and Ramlan Askolani (three), while three votes out of the 75 cast were spoiled.

Kamarudin Hassan and Syed Mahadi Syed Hassan were elected to the executive committee’s club category, securing 15 votes each.

The remaining votes went to Sugumaran Parthasarathy (nine), Johan Kamal Hamidon (six) and Faliq Firdaus (five), out of 50 votes cast.

The club category represents clubs competing in the MFL, AFL, National Women’s League and National Futsal Premier League under FAM’s new governance structure.

Football legend Zainal Abidin Hassan won the professional category seat on the executive committee, defeating former national teammate Azlan Johar 22-3.

The professional category provides one seat representing coaches, referees and players under the restructured executive committee.

Suraya Yaacob won the women’s seat on the executive committee, defeating Siti Faidul Maisarah Abdullah 15-10.
