Kenyans win elite Millennium Marathon races in Ghana

In Accra, the capital of Ghana, thousands of runners from different regions of the country and from abroad took part in the KGL Foundation Millennium Marathon 2026. Kenyan athletes won the elite 21 km races: Alex Korio finished first among the men, while Lucy Ndambuki won the women’s race, setting a new course record.

As MyJoyOnline reports, the competition at Independence Square in Accra was also dedicated to the theme of holistic well-being. This year’s marathon was linked to the KGL Foundation’s mental health initiative, in particular the Mental Health Index — a digital approach to raising awareness about mental health in Ghana.

Focus on mental health

The initiative continues the Corporate Wellness Forum programme held earlier this year. The forum introduced the Health & Fitness Index to assess corporate organisations based on physical and mental well-being indicators, as well as engagement with communities. The programme included expert sessions on physical activity, stress management and nutrition.

Organisers’ statement

KGL Foundation CEO Elliot Dadi said he was proud of the successful staging of the event, the team’s work and all race participants. According to the source, over the past five years the foundation has also implemented a number of social projects in the country.

These include the construction of the KGL-EVE Wellness Centre, described as the first mental health facility north of Accra, the renovation of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, the introduction of the Mental Health Index, investments in youth football through the KGL U-17 Championship, support for Ghana’s Black Stars national football team, and the provision of incubators to hospitals and other medical facilities.
