Day-Wicks set for AFL debut

Essendon rookie Archer Day-Wicks has been named to make his AFL debut against Sydney at Marvel Stadium on Saturday.

The 18-year-old has made an impression since joining the Club via pick No.6 in last year’s Rookie Draft from Bendigo Pioneers U18 and Vic Country, possessing the raw power and natural goal sense as a draft prospect that’s made him a difficult matchup as both a forward and occasional midfielder.

After a minor foot injury setback early in the pre-season, Day-Wicks has featured in every match for the Club at VFL level so far.

Looking threatening whenever the ball is in his hands, Day-Wicks managed 18 disposals, seven marks, five tackles and four inside 50's just recently against the Roos in round six.

With his body work and tackling getting better week-by-week, Day-Wicks has proven his potential, impressing coaches equally with his running patterns and ability to willingly slot into different roles as a young player.

Day-Wicks said he was grateful for his opportunity, hoping to have an impact at the highest level.

“I was absolutely stoked when I received the call. I originally thought it was my alarm ringing but then I saw Brad Scott’s name... I didn’t know what was going on. I knew it must have been important to be calling so early," Day-Wicks said.

“To be making my AFL debut is a lifelong dream come true for me. I have strived for this moment since I was 12 years old.

“I feel honoured to play for the Essendon Football Club. It all feels a bit surreal, the history, the great players who have come before me.. I hope I make them and the Bomber fans proud."

Alongside fellow debutant Lewis Hayes, Day-Wicks and the Dons will look to take down the Swans at Marvel Stadium this Saturday from 4:15pm AEST.
