Patrick Vieira takes charge of Senegal ahead of AFCON qualifying

In Senegal, Patrick Vieira has taken charge of the national football team ahead of the start of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying group stage. As Channel NewsAsia reports, 48 national teams will begin their qualifying campaigns this week, and 21 teams will have new head coaches.

Senegal's matches

Vieira was born in Dakar but moved to France with his mother as a child. As a member of the France national team, he became a world champion in 1998. After returning to Senegal as an adult, Vieira recalled the place where he played football with a tennis ball.

This month, Senegal will play away matches against Mozambique and Ethiopia, and will later face Comoros in a friendly match in Marseille. Senegal's previous coach, Pape Bouna Thiaw, left his post after an unsuccessful World Cup for the team in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Other appointments

Among the new coaches of African national teams are Africa Cup of Nations winners Aliou Cisse and Hervé Renard. Cisse, who led Senegal to the 2021 title, now works with the Angola national team, which will play Egypt in Cairo. Renard, who won the tournament with Zambia in 2012 and Côte d’Ivoire in 2015, has again taken charge of the Côte d’Ivoire national team ahead of a home match against Ghana.

After the World Cup, Tunisia appointed former national team defender Moïne Chaabani as head coach. French specialist Sébastien Migné has taken charge of Gabon, which will begin qualifying with an away match against Morocco. The 78-year-old Claude Le Roy has also returned to national team management: he became coach of Congo, where he had already worked in 2013–2015.
