India’s Rohan Bopanna and his partner Zhang Shuai of the People’s Republic of China lost in the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles event at the Australian Open 2025 tennis tournament on Tuesday.

The Indo-Chinese duo lost 2-6, 6-4, 11-9 against Australian pair Olivia Gadecki and John Peers, who, interestingly, won the men’s doubles gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics with Bopanna’s former partner Matthew Ebden.

Rohan Bopanna, 44, and Zhang Shuai, 35, saved a break point and held serve in the opening game of the match before breaking the Australian pair in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead in the first set.

Bopanna-Shuai would once again break Olivia Gadecki's serve in the eighth game to settle the first set 6-2.

The second set saw the Australians get an all-important break in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Olivia Gadecki and John Peers would go on to hold their serve for the remainder of the set and win it 6-4.

All square after two sets set, the match moved into a tie-break. Despite losing their serves in the opening points of the tie-break, neither pair allowed the other to run away with the contest.

Rohan Bopanna and Zhang Shuai even had a match-point opportunity with the score at 9-8 in their favour at one stage.

However, they couldn’t capitalise as the Australians went on to win the tie-breaker 11-9. Rohan Bopanna’s ouster from the mixed doubles event also ended India’s campaign at the Australian Open.

The Indian veteran, with Colombian partner Nicolas Barrientos, had exited the men’s doubles competition after a first-round elimination.

The first tennis Grand Slam of the year also saw Yuki Bhambri and his French partner Albano Olivetti as well as Rithvik Bollipalli and Ryan Seggerman of the USA fail to make it beyond the first round in the men’s doubles event.

India’s N Sriram Balaji and Mexican partner Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela lost in the second round while Sumit Nagal was eliminated in the first round of the singles event after a loss to Czechia’s Tomas Machac.
