The pundit was analysing Arsenal’s 0-0 draw against Nottingham Forest, where the majority of Mikel Arteta’s players failed to impress.

Martin Odegaard was one of the worst players on the pitch, but he wasn’t the only one, with another abysmal performer being Viktor Gyokeres.

Gyokeres’ impressive performance against Chelsea gave Arsenal fans hope, but it only took the striker’s return to Premier League action to realise that so much is wrong.

Alan Shearer was surprised by Gyokeres’ one-versus-one against Murillo, admitting he was shocked at how easily the Forest defender handled the situation.

Shearer’s comment came on The Rest Is Football podcast, and was followed by Richards sharing his verdict on Gyokeres and what is next for the Arsenal striker.

“I think they [Arsenal] need to play [Gabriel] Jesus now,” Richards said.

Fellow co-host Gary Lineker replied, “I wouldn’t disagree.”

Richards then shared his doubts about Gyokeres, calling on Arteta to drop the Swede for his own good.

“I think Arteta’s stuck with Gyokeres, whether he’s struggling for confidence, to adapt to the league, I know he’s played Championship, we know that, but the Premier League’s a different beast.”

Richards also commented on what he has realised about Gyokeres when comparing his form at Sporting CP to his performances at Arsenal.

“All the clips I watched of Gyokeres last season, and I remember saying when he first signed, don’t expect him to be a world beater.

“But what he did have was running in behind aggressively, but now it looks like he’s not doing the same thing, and that worries me. Maybe he needs a couple of games out of the team, get his confidence back and then come again.”

The pundit admitted he’s worried that Gyokeres isn’t doing anything close to what he did at Sporting CP, which must sound alarm bells at Arsenal.

It may seem reactionary, but Richards’ concern paints a far bigger picture of how the future could look for Gyokeres at Arsenal.

There’s already doubt that things won’t work for the striker, which could give Andrea Berta an incentive to move the Swede on sooner than anticipated.

It’s one thing to take time to adapt, but another to show no sign of being able to replicate past numbers in England.

It’s not all doom and gloom for Arsenal, as Gyokeres has a CIES market value of €94.4m, which is £81.5m.

Cutting losses sooner rather than later makes sense, particularly as it’s not just the finances that matter; it’s the future of the squad, which right now, isn’t ticking in attack and is crying out for a goalscorer.

Arsenal spent £64m on what they thought was a guaranteed source of goals, but that’s not the case, and there’s no shame in that, but only if Berta reacts proactively.
