Liverpool news: Arne Slot gets frank reality check from own player as Reds legend speaks out

Liverpool made the perfect start to their new Champions League campaign with a 3-1 win over AC Milan.

The Reds had fallen behind after just three minutes courtesy of former Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic. But goals from Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai turned things around for Arne Slot.

Slot and his team will now turn their attention back to the Premier League, where they host Bournemouth next: a fixture which gives them the perfect opportunity to get back on track after losing against Nottingham Forest last weekend.

Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest news from in and around Anfield ahead of Saturday's match...

Slot gets reality check

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk insists that Arne Slot will get no honeymoon period following the Reds maiden defeat of the season last weekend.

Van Dijk was on the scoresheet in Tuesday night's 3-1 win over AC Milan in the Champions League but Liverpool slumped to a shock 1-0 loss against Nottingham Forest just days earlier.

That result raised eyebrows - and even though the Reds bounced back in style, Van Dijk admitted that Slot and the team would feel the heat if standards slip.

Liverpool favourite John Barnes has sung the praises of midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai following his goal in the 3-1 win over AC Milan.

Szoboszlai plundered Liverpool's third and final goal in Milan to ensure the Reds travelled back to Merseyside with all three points in their European opener.

And off the back of his successful maiden season last year, Szoboszlai has now been linked to Anfield royalty in Steven Gerrard by Barnes, who has been impressed with his superb start to the 2024/25 campaign.

Clubs line up Matip swoop

A host of clubs are weighing up a move for Joel Matip, who is still a free agent after leaving Liverpool.

The veteran defender was among a number of players released by the Reds last season. He was a regular during Jurgen Klopp's tenure but missed his final season at the club after suffering a serious injury.

But talkSPORT report that West Ham are one of the clubs considering a swoop for Matip, who has also been offered to Fulham and Wolves.
