BBC: Liverpool to 'Recommence' Talks for Crystal Palace 'Superstar' on Monday

Liverpool and Crystal Palace will "recommence" talks over a deal for Marc Guehi on Monday, according to BBC Sport journalist Sami Mokbel.

The reigning Premier League champions opened their campaign with a thrilling 4-2 win over Bournemouth on Friday night, with new signing Hugo Ekitike scoring and assisting one, while fellow summer signings Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz all started too.

But Arne Slot is still keen to add a new defender to his squad after sealing a deal for Parma youngster Giovanni Leoni before the game, and talks are now set to begin once more over a deal for England international Guehi.

Liverpool and Crystal Palace to Hold Guehi Talks on Monday

Guehi, who has been described as a "superstar", is in the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park and has been subject to heavy interest from Anfield all summer.

Liverpool had been hopeful of securing a deal worth around £30m for the former Chelsea star, but Palace's valuation of over £40m saw a deal stall, and it had been anticipated that he could now stay at the club and then leave on a free transfer next summer.

However, while appearing on Football Focus, journalist Mokbel has revealed that the current plan is for the 24-year-old to play for Palace against Chelsea in their opening game on Sunday, before talks will continue on Monday to find an agreement.

"The Liverpool situation has presented itself now. I think he would go. A deal at the moment, an agreement between the clubs isn't forthcoming and hasn't happened. My understanding is that Marc Guehi will play tomorrow against Chelsea, which is a bit of a risk when you consider injury and stuff like that, and then talks will recommence on Monday. But there is definitely legs in that deal."

Palace owner Steve Parish has admitted that he wants a resolution before the end of the window, with either Guehi leaving for a fee or signing a new contract, and it's understood that Guehi is only interested in moving to Anfield should he leave, but he also wants guarantees of playing time ahead of the World Cup next year.
