Angel Gomes snubs £100,000-a-week West Ham deal, Man Utd reunion still a possibility

Former Manchester United academy star Angel Gomes is on the move this summer when his Lille contract expires.

Manchester United are planning a squad overhaul in the summer, but it remains to be seen if the club will have the funds to sign the players on Ruben Amorim’s wish list.

Amorim saw very little reinforcement arrive in the January transfer window, with United bringing in two players, including Patrick Dorgu from Leece and Ayden Heaven from Arsenal.

The former Sporting CP manager will likely need additional midfield reinforcement amid uncertainty around the futures of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.

United also need to strengthen in defence and up front.

Ineos are set to prioritise young signings again but they must also look for clever deals in the market.

Angel Gomes snubs West Ham

Angel Gomes is letting his Lille contract run out before embarking on a free transfer in the summer, with multiple clubs reportedly interested in the England international.

United are one of four Premier League clubs interested in a deal for Gomes. The others include Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Tottenham and West Ham.

The latest report from The Guardian suggests disappointment at West Ham’s expense despite offering the 24-year-old a contract worth £100,000 a week.

This means the Hammers could be forced to look at alternative targets in the market.

West Ham know there won’t be many midfielders as versatile as Gomes in the free market, which is presumably why United and other clubs are interested in a deal.

Gomes is a nimble midfielder with a low centre of gravity and no player had more assists than him in the 2023/24 Ligue 1 season.

This season has been a struggle for Gomes due to injuries, although there is a feeling that Lille would rather give his minutes to someone else, knowing he’s destined to leave.

Speaking to reporters in December, Lille manager Bruno Genesio addressed Gomes’ injury, saying (via Get Football News France): “[The injury] needed intervention so that he is no longer hampered [by it]. We had to account for a four-week absence so that he could once again be operational. It was preferable that we intervened right away rather than wait and let him play handicapped [by the problem].”

Gomes holds incredible Manchester United record

Although Gomes left United in 2020, the English midfielder holds the record for being the youngest player to represent United since Duncan Edwards in 1953.

Gomes made his debut at 16-years and 263 days when he became the first player born in the 2000s to appear in the Premier League.

It remains to be seen if Gomes will return to United, but there’s already history and a rich connection for the move to appeal to him.

West Ham will struggle to compete with United for Gomes’ signature as a result.
