Pakistan reaches Asian Games cricket semi-finals due to rain - Dawn

Pakistan's national cricket team in Japan reached the Asian Games semi-finals after its quarter-final match against Hong Kong was called off due to continuous rain. The match at Korogi Sports Park Stadium did not begin: it was abandoned during the toss because large parts of the field were covered with protective covers and there was no possibility of holding the match even in a shortened format, Dawn reports.

Ranking advantage

Under tournament regulations, if a match does not take place, the team with the higher ICC Twenty20 International ranking advances to the next round. Pakistan, which was ranked higher than Hong Kong, secured a place in the semi-finals without playing.

Pakistan was among the four seeded teams, along with India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, that began their campaigns directly in the quarter-finals. Hong Kong reached this stage after finishing second in Group B: the team beat Malaysia by eight wickets but lost to Oman by 41 runs.

Next opponent

Pakistan, captained by Sahibzada Farhan and coached by Mike Hesson, will face the winner of the Bangladesh-Malaysia match in the semi-finals. The semi-final matches are scheduled for October 1, while the bronze-medal match and the final are due to take place on October 3.

Another quarter-final between India and Afghanistan was also called off because of rain. India advanced to the semi-finals due to its higher ranking and will play the winner of the Sri Lanka-Nepal match.
