Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie is closing in on becoming Arsenal's eighth signing of the summer transfer window, football.london understands.

The Gunners have had an excellent window on paper with every position being strengthened in Mikel Arteta's side. After Eberechi Eze was confirmed over the weekend, the north Londoners don't seem to be stopping just yet.

Hincapie has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium for some time and after expressing his desire to leave Leverkusen, Arsenal look set to add another defender to their squad after Cristhian Mosquera's arrival from Valencia.

Arteta is understood to want a left-sided defender to complement his strong selection of defenders. William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes are the first-choice centre-backs but Hincapie and Mosquera would significantly improve the depth in the backline.

With the transfer window closing next week, Andrea Berta is facing a race against time to get Hincapie through the door. Fortunately, there seems to be positive movement in negotiations.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Ecuador international has said yes to a move to north London with personal terms agreed between the club and player. The journalist has claimed that a 'long-term deal' will be signed by Hincapie.

Interestingly, the key part of Romano's update comes in the format of the move. It's claimed that the deal will be a season-long loan including a clause handing Arsenal an obligation to buy next summer. With over £250million spent this summer, it's understood the club are actively working smarter.

Player sales will be key before the window closes with the likes of Jakub Kiwior and Reiss Nelson expected to depart. football.london understands there was consciousness at the club about the UEFA Financial Fair Play restrictions prior to the signing of Eze.
