Cebu s 7th District rolls out grassroots sports program

CEBU, Philippines — The 7th District of Cebu under the leadership of congresswoman Particia Patsy Calderon formally launched their multi-sport grassroots development program aimed at giving exposure to aspiring players with the ultimate goal of molding the next generation of champion athletes from southern Cebu.

As we all know, Congresswoman Patsy is a doctor by profession and one of her advocacies is health and this grassroots sports program is one aspect of that, said Atty. Ramil Abing, who represented Calderon during an organizational meeting with the sports coordinators at the Moalboal Municipal Hall recently.

Let us all work together to make the first edition of the tournament successful, Abing added.

Billed as the Calderon Cup, the first event of the year-long undertaking is the 21 Under basketball tournament set to kick off on March 21.

It will be participated in by all eight municipalities comprising the 7th District.

The competing teams are divided into two groups that will play a double round robin in a home-and-away format.

Group A is composed of Dumanjug, Ronda, Alcantara, and Moalboal, while Group B features Badian, Alegria, Malabuyoc and Ginatilan.

The top seeds at the end of elimination will gain automatic entry to the semifinals. Teams No.2 and No.3 will face each other in the crossover quarterfinals for the other two semis berths.

The championship is a best-of-three series.

Aside from basketball, the other sporting disciplines lined up for the Calderon Cup are volleyball, billiards, tennis, table tennis, and chess.

Moreover, there will be a coaching and player clinics for basketball and futsal this summer to give the youth in the district a chance to further enhance their athletic skills.
