The 2026 men’s T20 Cricket World Cup is coming to a close. Like every other sport or sporting event, there are winners and losers.

Unlike many competitions (like the Summer & Winter Olympics), the T20 World Cup has not been around for very long.

The T20 Cricket World Cup is an event held every two years. The event was launched in 2007, when South Africa hosted. No country has won the World Cup more than twice. Two teams have an opportunity to break that trend this year at the 2026 T20 Cricket World Cup.

2024: India

India, England, and the West Indies have all won the event twice. Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Australia have won it once. Now, for 2026, only one country that has won the championship twice will have a chance at a three-peat.

2024 India Defeats South Africa

Final Score: 176/7 to 169/8, India wins by 7 runs.

Player of the Match: Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli led the match in an opening partnership with Rohit Sharma. Kohli finished the match with 76 runs off 59 balls, while earning six 4s and two 6s. He was awarded the Player of the Match as a result.

2022 England Defeats Pakistan

Final Score: 138/5 to 137/8, England wins by 5 wickets.

Player of the Match: Sam Curran

England’s Sam Curran took home the Player of the Match award after putting together a tremendous bowling performance. In four overs, he only surrendered 12 runs and collected three wickets.

2021 Australia Defeats New Zealand

Final Score: 173/2 to 172/4, Australia won by 8 wickets.

Player of the Match: Mitchell Marsh

Mitchell Marsh was a double threat for Australia, putting in a solid bowling performance paired with a great knock. In 50 balls, he collected 77 runs, six 4s, and four 6s. In Marsh’s single bowling over, he only surrendered 11 runs.

2016 West Indies Defeats England

Final Score: 161/6 to 155/9, West Indies won by 4 wickets.

Player of the Match: Marlon Samuels

Player of the Match was awarded to Marlon Samuels, who put together an impressive knock to propel West Indies to victory. Samuels was third in the batting order, smacking 85 runs in 66 balls.

2014 Sri Lanka Defeats India

Final Score: 134/4 to 130/4, Sri Lanka won by 6 wickets.

Player of the Match: Kumar Sangakkara

Despite not having the most runs at the end of the match, Kumar Sangakkara was awarded Player of the Match. Sangakkara collected 52 runs off 35 balls to help Sri Lanka win the match.

2012 West Indies Defeats Sri Lanka

Final Score: 137/6 to 101, West Indies won by 36 runs.

Player of the Match: Marlon Samuels

Four years before the West Indies won the 2016 T20 Cricket World Cup, Marlon Samuels helped them earn their first T20 Cricket World Cup title against Sri Lanka. In this match, Samuels put together a 78 for 56 knock along with a 1/15 bowling figure in four overs.

2010 England Defeats Australia

Final Score: 148/3 to 147/6, England won by 7 wickets.

Player of the Match: Craig Kleswetter

Craig Kleswetter’s match against Australia was another instance of a batter from the opening partnership propelling his team to victory. Kleswetter knocked 63 runs, including seven boundaries and two maximums.

2009 Pakistan Defeats Sri Lanka

Final Score: 139/2 to 138/6, Pakistan won by 8 wickets.

Player of the Match: Shahid Afridi

Shahid Afridi put together an impressive all-round performance for the victorious Pakistan. He collected one wicket against 20 runs in four overs of bowling. Additionally, Afridi scored 54 runs off 40 balls, as Pakistan needed only its first four batters to end Sri Lanka’s title hopes.

2007 India Defeats Pakistan

Final Score: 157/5 to 152, India won by 5 runs.

Player of the Match: Irfan Pathan

In the first T20 Cricket World Cup ever, Irfan Pathan shut the door on Pakistan with one of the greatest bowling performances at this level. Across four overs, Pathan only surrendered 16 runs, while collecting three wickets, earning a 4.00 Economy in the championship match.
