Iga Swiatek branded a 'sore loser' and heavily criticized for what she's said after losing to Amanda Anisimova

Iga Swiatek saw the curtain come down on 2025 with a three-set defeat to Amanda Anisimova at the WTA Finals.

Things started well for Swiatek as she won the first set on a tie-break to put herself one step away from the semifinals in Riyadh.

However, Anisimova is proving the ultimate mentality monster on the WTA Tour in the second half of 2025 and roared back to make the last four in her maiden WTA Finals foray.

Swiatek suffered an unwanted first during the match with Anisimova, and she will be extremely disappointed not to progress from the group stage of the tournament.

After the match, Swiatek has come under fire for some comments she has made about the reversal.

After the match, Swiatek was pretty downbeat about her performance, especially after losing after winning the first set.

Swiatek told the press after the match: “I felt good mentally, physically, and tennis-wise, also it was nice, looking at the conditions and everything. So I don’t really get why I couldn’t go out of the group. Maybe I won too much in the last years and this is karma. It’s really hard for me to say.”

Fans were incensed with her comments and felt that she needed to lose with a little bit more grace after her attempts to take the gloss away from Anisimova.

Another tennis fan said: “Not sure why she didn’t just say, ‘I played really well today, but in the second and third sets, Amanda was playing out of her mind. Props to her, she played better today.’ I guess she just can’t acknowledge that on a given day, she got outplayed. Sad.”

Another was disgruntled at her attitude: “Or your competition got better and your rally tolerance goes into the dumpster when you get frustrated. Every time she doesn’t feel like she has 100% control of the rally at all times, then she just gives up.”

Swiatek’s attitude stunned plenty, with another saying: “I can’t believe she said something like that, I don’t believe it, come on Iga, you’re so much better than this.”

It’s fair to say that these comments won’t have gone down too well in the eyes of Anisimova, who worked very hard to come back and win the match.

Swiatek has a history of being somewhat controversial. In January, Madison Keys slammed her for an extended welcome break at the end of a set in a win for the American at the Australian Open.

There is stuff to work on for Swiatek when it comes to next year and perhaps one of those is learning how to lose with a little bit more etiquette than this.

That said, it’s never easy to be interviewed just moments after a loss and it will be interesting to now see if anything else is made of this in the coming days.
