Mohamed Salah breaks down in tears as Anfield sings for Diogo Jota right after injury-time goal in Premier League opener

Liverpool’s return to Premier League action was a night of mixed emotions at Anfield, as joy on the pitch intertwined with a heartfelt tribute for late forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash in July. The Reds secured a 4-2 victory over Bournemouth in their season opener, and Mohamed Salah, who scored the game’s final goal, was moved to tears as fans paid tribute to Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, who also died in the crash. The pair had been involved in a fatal accident on Spain’s A-52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria on July 3, just days after Jota’s wedding to his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso. Driving a Lamborghini, the vehicle suffered a tyre blowout, sending them off the road and ending their lives. Anfield paid a heartfelt gesture, displaying banners declaring the stadium will “always be his home” and joining Salah in an emotional homage.

“They sang for him (Jota) before the game, in the first minute, after 20 minutes, and again at the end. It was so impressive, so powerful,” Liverpool head coach Arne Slot reflected after the game. “His wife is here, his children are here, and for them it might be special to hear how much he's loved over here.”

A dramatic opener

On the pitch, the match delivered the drama fans expect from Liverpool. Hugo Ekitike made an immediate impact on his league debut, opening the scoring in the 37th minute, with Cody Gakpo doubling the lead shortly after the interval. Bournemouth, however, refused to fold. Antoine Semenyo pulled one back in the 64th minute and completed his brace twelve minutes later, briefly unsettling the home crowd and giving the visitors hope.

Liverpool’s response came from the bench, as Federico Chiesa struck in the 88th minute to give Liverpool the lead again.

A fourth, which all but ensured Liverpool's win, arrived in stoppage time when Salah, chasing a loose ball past the defence, cut inside and slotted it into the bottom corner, completing a dramatic finish. His 94th-minute strike not only sealed the win but also saw the Egyptian join Andy Cole in fourth place on the all-time Premier League scorers’ list with 187 goals. Overcome with emotion, Salah pointed to the heavens and mimicked Jota’s iconic goal celebration.
