Napier cricketer makes New Zealand junior indoor team

Hudson, 10, attends Porritt Primary School and is training five days a week in the lead-up to the tournament.

He is the youngest member of the U14 New Zealand boys’ team, which features mainly 12- and 13-year-olds.

Hudson was picked after a strong performance at the provincial age-group championships in Wellington earlier this year.

His dad, Chip Latter, a groundsman for Napier City Council (including at McLean Park), is extremely proud of his son’s selection.

“I’m massively proud,” he said.

“He’s only been playing indoor cricket for two years ... but he’s taken to it like a duck to water.”

He said he’d been playing outdoor cricket since he could walk, and “he absolutely loves it”.

“The hardest thing for him since making the team has been not playing rugby.”

He said he was an all-rounder, and he’d received plenty of support and coaching from top cricketers at Bay Indoor Sports at Onekawa.

His older brother, Bayley, is also a New Zealand indoor cricket representative.

Hudson dreams of one day playing for the Central Stags and potentially the Black Caps.

A Givealittle page has been set up to help cover the $7500 cost of Hudson’s trip to South Africa.

His dad also plans to make the trip.
