Daniil Medvedev, Felix Auger-Aliassime skip Washington after coaching changes

Daniil Medvedev and Felix Auger-Aliassime have both decided to skip next week's Citi Open in Washington after recently making coaching changes.

The Russian tennis star, who is currently ranked No. 8 in the world, endured a disappointing Wimbledon campaign after being beaten by Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets in the third round.

Following his early Wimbledon exit, Medvedev announced that he was splitting with coach Thomas Johansson, with whom he started working after last year's US Open.

On the other side, Auger-Aliassime enjoyed a much more positive run at The Championships, reaching the quarterfinal before falling to Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller that lasted five hours and 15 minutes.

A couple of days later, the 25-year-old announced that he was ending his nine-year partnership with coach Frederic Fontang.

How Medvedev and Auger-Aliassime have done in Washington

Medvedev has made four Washington appearances during his career. His best result at the Citi Open came in 2019, when he reached the final before losing to Nick Kyrgios.

Last year, Medvedev returned to Washington for the first time since 2019 and reached the quarterfinal.

As for Auger-Aliassime, he has made three appearances in the United States capital but without much success, recording round-of-16 exits in 2019 and 2021, while losing in the second round in 2023.

Medvedev and Auger-Aliassime turn their focus to Montreal

After deciding to skip Washington - likely to give themselves an extra week to adjust following their coaching changes - Medvedev and Auger-Aliassime are expected to begin their North American hard-court swings at the Montreal Masters, which starts on August 2.

Auger-Aliassime will be one of the home favorites in Montreal and will undoubtedly hope to make a deep run in front of the Canadian crowd.
