Aussie stars pour fuel all over Ashes fire

Australia’s cricket stars have relived one of the modern game’s most controversial moments, talking through the stumping of England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow during the 2023 Ashes.

Lord’s erupted when Australian gloveman Alex Carey underarmed the Dukes ball into the stumps at the striker’s end, with Bairstow given out having wandered down the pitch.

Looking back at the footage during an interview with Fox Cricket, Australian opener Usman Khawaja could only laugh.

“I just laugh because he just walks straight out of his crease,” he said.

“It was fair game.

“The execution of Alex Carey was unbelievable.”

Khawaja also acknowledged that Bairstow had attempted a similar dismissal earlier in the series.

“The funny thing was, Jonny was trying to get me out stumped the same way against the spinner the first game at Edgbaston,” he continued.

“Against the spinner, I almost lost my footing and Jonny just waiting there for six seconds.

“Keepers are sneaky, they know what’s going on.”

Australian bowler Josh Hazlewood confessed it wasn’t the first time he had witnessed that mode of dismissal in a match.

“I’ve seen it done a handful of times growing up over the years, obviously never in a Test match,” Hazlewood said.

“I’ve seen it done at school cricket, club cricket going through the year.

“Pretty lazy from Jonny, and we took advantage I guess.”

All-rounder Cameron Green, who bowled the fateful delivery, earned a wicket to his career tally for the bouncer that Bairstow comfortably evaded.

“The only thing I can comment on is I got the Test stumping,” Green smirked.

“As a fast bowler you kind of hope you never get a Test stumping.”
