Six footballers found without work permits in Latvia

Latvia’s Border Guard discovered six foreign athletes this summer who were working as professional footballers without the required work permits. LSM English reports, citing information from the service provided to the LETA agency.

Proceedings in August

In August, border guards initiated administrative proceedings against a Japanese citizen and a Nigerian citizen. According to the service, they worked as professional footballers at a football club without obtaining the required work permits.

The Border Guard also initiated administrative proceedings against a member of the club’s board. The case concerns the employment of persons without the required work permits.

Cases in July and previous years

In July, Latvia’s State Border Guard initiated another four administrative proceedings against two Japanese citizens, as well as citizens of Tunisia and Brazil. The proceedings concerned these individuals working as professional footballers without proper permits.

Last year, one athlete and two board members were held administratively liable for violations in the field of employment. In 2024, 16 athletes and four board members were held liable.
