Emma Raducanu ends Andy Murray's Wimbledon career with big announcement

Andy Murray's Wimbledon career is over. The two-time men's singles champion was due to team up with fellow Brit Emma Raducanu in the mixed doubles this evening, but she has sadly been forced to pull out due to wrist soreness.

In a statement, the 21-year-old said: "Unfortunately I woke up with some stiffness in my right wrist this morning, so therefore I have decided to make the very tough decision to withdraw from the mixed doubles tonight. I’m disappointed as I was really looking forward to playing with Andy but got to take care."

Raducanu, who had surgery on her wrist last year, is still expected to take on New Zealand's Lulu Sun in her fourth round women's singles clash on Sunday, but her withdrawal means Murray will not be stepping out onto the Wimbledon turf again.

The news will likely be greeted with huge disappointment, not least by Raducanu herself, who was clearly looking forward to the opportunity of teaming up with the Scot.

"It's just an amazing opportunity to be able to play with him," she said. "It's something that I'm going to cherish.

"For me it was a no-brainer. In my team, they were asking me, “Emma, are you sure you want to play? Just in case you’re still in the tournament.” I was like “No-brainer”.’

However, after her third round win over Maria Sakkari, Raducanu suggested that the scheduling of the tournament might prove problematic, as she bids for glory in the women's singles.

"The scheduling of (the mixed) was not ideal," she said, referencing the fact they were facing a late slot on Court One, a move that some have claimed might have been motivated by the All England Club attempting to ensure the match didn't clash with England's Euro 2024 clash with Switzerland.

It means Murray's final match is likely to have been the straight sets first round round defeat with his brother Jamie in the men's doubles on Thursday night, a match that was followed by an emotional interview on court with presenter Sue Barker.
