Ten-time champion Novak Djokovic made history at the 2026 Australian Open, becoming the first male player to record 400 match wins at the majors.

The Paris 2024 tennis Olympic champion beat the Netherlands' Botic van de Zandschulp 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4) on Saturday (24 January) at the Rod Laver Arena to reach the fourth round.

Playing with the roof closed due to the extreme Australian heat, the Serbian superstar got off to the perfect start in the opening set as he produced no unforced errors in the first five games. He sealed that opener in 42 minutes.

The 38-year old, who won his 100th match at the Australian Open in the opening round showed a bit of frustration in the second set which saw the Dutchman take a medical timeout to have his right shoulder treated.

The tension carried over to the third set, in which Djokovic also needed some medical treatment after tumbling on the court in the third game of the third set. Van de Zandschulp managed to break his opponent's serve to go up 3-1.

Djokovic changed rackets, fought back, and forced a third-set tiebreak. With the two level at 6-6, Djokovic closed it out sealing the win after two hours and 44 minutes.

“It’s been a great start to the tournament. But I’m not getting ahead of myself. I learned a lesson last year, I got too ahead of myself too early in some of the Grand Slams. I’m trying to give these young guys a push for their money. I’m still around. I’m hanging in there," said Djokovic.

Djokovic is seeking his 11th title at Melbourne Park and what would be his 25th Grand Slam title overall.
