Marc-Andre ter Stegen says he ‘feels bad for Eric Garcia’ after Champions League red card for Barcelona

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen spoke out after seeing Eric Garcia sent off in Thursday’s 2-1 defeat to Monaco after the game.

A poor pass out from Ter Stegen left Eric in trouble and saw the 23-year-old make a challenge that ended with him being given a straight red card after just 11 minutes.

To go a man down so early in the game proved influential in the game, and Ter Stegen said it was a misunderstanding between the two players.

“We didn’t understand each other well in that situation, I feel bad for Eric, it hurts him. And we played 80 minutes with one less player,” he told Movistar. “We didn’t understand each other. Something happened that shouldn’t happen to anyone. These are things that happen in football. The defeat hurts, because with 10 on the field we stood up and tried to get a point.”

Lamine Yamal equalised to give Barcelona hope before Monaco went ahead in the second half with a shot that looked to go in off Ter Stegen.

The goalkeeper didn’t say too much about the second goal but is already looking ahead.

“We stood up for ourselves. And the second goal came at an undeserved moment. In the end you are left with the bad feeling of not having picked up any points,” he added. “In the Champions League you always have to win. That’s the objective. We’ll try to win the next game at home.”

Defeat to Monaco is Barcelona’s first of the season on a tough night for Hansi Flick’s side. The team return to action in La Liga on Sunday away to Villarreal.
