Truls Möregårdh was overwhelmed with emotion as ABBA’s ‘The Winner Takes It All’ rang around the Renaissance Arena in Malmö, Sweden.

The Swedish home hero completed the statement performance of his career at the 2025 World Table Tennis Europe Smash, as he beat world number one Lin Shidong 4-3 (11-8, 8-11, 12-10, 11-8, 4-11, 11-13, 11-9) in the men’s singles final on Sunday, 24 August.

In the first edition of the table tennis Europe Smash, there is a European champion on home soil, and in a breathtaking 66 minutes in the championship match.

“To see everyone that I love sit so close gave me so much calmness at the end of the match,” Möregårdh said on court straight after his monumental victory. “It felt so easy to breath suddenly.

“I was looking at my dad, my mum, my brothers, my girlfriend, all my friends, [everyone] and it felt so easy to play at that point. I’m so happy to be able to win this on home soil, they help me so much.”

Earlier in the women’s singles final, Sun Yingsha continues to be the woman to challenge crown. The world number one from the People’s Republic of China claimed her fourth major smash, beating compatriot and friend Wang Manyu 4-2 (11-9, 11-9, 5-11, 10-12, 11-6, 11-5) in the final on Sunday.
